Get the Hell out of Dodge: Derivative "Haunt" spooks and tingles just enough

Haunt (2014)
85 min., rated R.

Haunted-house horror films can be victims of familiarity, but then be saved by their execution. Just look at "The Conjuring" and "Insidious." Originality is hard to come by after all, but, for his narrative feature debut, director Mac Carter showcases what he can skillfully do with the derivative. Dusted off of the subgenre's cobwebs just a little bit and goosed up with a tingly confidence, an evocatively wintry atmosphere, and several effectively skittery scares, "Haunt" is another Exhibit A. It's plenty creepy, though not a patch on those films that have come before. To read the rest of the review, go to Diabolique Magazine.
